If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you know dairy prices keep climbing. But here’s the good news: you can make a lot of your favorite staples at home with just a few basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
Not only will you save money, but homemade versions taste fresher, have fewer preservatives, and you can tweak them to your liking. Let’s go through five easy recipes you can start making today.
1. Homemade Heavy Cream
Perfect for soups, sauces, or desserts.
- ¾ cup whole milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
Simply whisk the melted butter into the milk until smooth. Use right away or store in the fridge for up to a few days.
2. Homemade Butter
Fresh, creamy, and so simple.
- 2 cups heavy cream (preferably not ultra-pasteurized)
- Optional: pinch of salt
Beat the cream with a mixer until the fat separates from the liquid. Rinse the butter under cold water, pressing out excess liquid. Add a pinch of salt if you like.
3. Homemade Sour Cream
Great for dips, baked potatoes, and baking.
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tsp white vinegar
- ¼ cup whole milk
Mix together, cover loosely, and let sit at room temperature for 24 hours to thicken. Chill before using.
4. Homemade Mayo
Creamy, tangy, and customizable.
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup neutral oil (canola, sunflower, or vegetable)
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- ½ tsp salt
- Pinch of sugar (optional)
Blend all ingredients together until thick and creamy. Store in the fridge for up to a week.
5. Homemade Cream Cheese
Smooth, spreadable, and perfect on bagels.
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 3 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice
- ½ tsp salt (optional)
Heat milk and cream until just boiling, then add vinegar or lemon juice. Stir until curds form. Strain through cheesecloth and refrigerate.
💡 Tip: Making these at home not only cuts costs but also means fewer trips to the store. Plus, you control the ingredients—no mystery additives!
