Family Fun in Dallas: Budget-Friendly Things To Do With Kids (Without Breaking the Bank)

Sandra @ SavingABuck

Let’s be honest—keeping the whole family entertained and on budget isn’t always easy, especially in a big city like Dallas. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a great time. Whether you’re a local mom looking for a weekend idea, or just visiting the DFW area with kids in tow, Dallas is packed with family-friendly adventures that won’t drain your wallet.

As a mom, bargain hunter, and Dallas-lover myself, I’ve rounded up my favorite affordable (and a few totally free!) things to do in the Big D with kids of all ages.

🐘 1. Say Hello to the Giants at the Dallas Zoo

One of the best zoos in Texas, hands down. And it’s surprisingly affordable—especially if you go on “Penguin Days” in January and February when admission drops to just $8. Kids will love the Giants of the Savanna, where giraffes walk right up to you for snacks. (Pro tip: bring your own water bottles and snacks—saves a bunch!)

🎨 2. Get Hands-On at the Perot Museum

If you’ve got curious kiddos who ask “Why?” every three minutes, this place is for you. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is packed with interactive exhibits, a children’s discovery area, and even dinosaur fossils. Admission is cheaper if you book online ahead of time, and kids under 2 get in free!

🚂 3. Ride the McKinney Avenue Trolley (Totally Free!)

Yes, free. Hop aboard one of these vintage trolleys that roll through Uptown and parts of downtown Dallas. It’s a relaxing ride with old-school charm, and the best part is your kids will think it’s a real-life train adventure.

🌳 4. Picnic + Play at Klyde Warren Park

This is one of our favorite family go-tos. There’s a huge playground, regular food trucks, splash pads in the summer, and lots of free family events (think: kids yoga, lawn games, and outdoor story times). Pack a picnic and let the kids run wild.

🦕 5. Explore the Dinosaur Tracks at Cedar Hill State Park

Did you know you can walk where actual dinosaurs roamed? The trails around Joe Pool Lake have fossilized dino tracks and scenic lake views. A $7 day pass gets the whole family in (kids under 12 are free), and it’s a great way to sneak in some education with your fresh air.

🧁 6. Treat Yo’ Self on Lower Greenville

Okay, hear me out—this one’s for when you need a treat day. Lower Greenville is packed with fun dessert stops like Joy Macarons, Botolino Gelato, and Truck Yard (yes, they serve kid-friendly eats too). A sweet tooth stroll is sometimes all you need to lift everyone’s mood. Just set a spending limit ahead of time if you’re saving.

🎥 7. Catch a Movie at a Discount Theater

Look up Cinemark Legacy or Studio Movie Grill for their budget movie nights—especially during summer. Some places even offer $1 family movies on certain days. Bring your own candy from the dollar store (shh, we won’t tell).

📚 8. Visit Your Local Library Branch

Dallas Public Libraries aren’t just books—they’re full-blown event hubs for families. From puppet shows and craft days to LEGO building clubs, you can find free events almost daily. Plus, it’s a quiet (air-conditioned) way to spend a few hours when Texas heat gets wild.

🛝 9. Let Loose at Play Street Museum

This adorable indoor play space is built just for little ones (ages 1-8). There’s a pretend grocery store, art center, firehouse—you name it. It’s around $13 per kid for hours of hands-on fun. And yes, there’s coffee for the parents.

🚀 10. Bonus: Take a Day Trip to Fort Worth

It’s worth the 45-minute drive. Visit the Fort Worth Stockyards to watch a real cattle drive, explore the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, or grab lunch in Sundance Square. Just don’t forget the cowboy hats for pictures!

Final Thoughts From Sandra 🌟

Family memories don’t have to come with a credit card statement. Dallas is full of fun, creative ways to enjoy time together without overspending. I hope this list gives you a few fresh ideas—and maybe even inspires a weekend adventure.

If you try any of these, I’d love to hear how it went! Tag me on Instagram @SavingABuck or leave a comment below with your favorite Dallas spots.

And as always—keep saving, keep smiling. 💸💖
